11 Facts About Breast Cancer

October is breast cancer awareness month. Did you know? Breast cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality, but only 5-10 percent cases are due to inheritance from father or mother. The rest are due to ageing process and “Wear & Tear” of life in general. Here are some other facts about breast cancer:

 

  1. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. That comes to 46 crores females. It is the second leading cause of deaths among women.
  2. As one ages, the chances of breast cancer also increase. Breast cancer related deaths among women occur most between the age of 55-64.
  3. Healthy diet and exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 40 percent.
  4. It is recommended that women above the age of 40 should have a mammogram test every year.
  5. If detected early, breast cancer has a 98 percent survival rate.
  6. Men can get breast cancer too. A man’s lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is 1 in 1,000. An estimated 2150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
  7. Poor oral health or gum disease can increase the likelihood of breast cancer by 11 times.
  8. Smoking is associated with increased breast cancer risk among women.
  9. Mammography has helped reduce breast cancer mortality by a whopping one-third in the US since 1990. 89.4 percent of women in US diagnosed with breast cancer survive five years or more from 62 percent in the 90s. This number is improving thanks to improvement in R&D.
  10. Skin changes, such as redness and swelling, changes in size or shape, general pain and lumps or nodes are all signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
  11. Depending on the stage of the cancer, it might be treated with one or more of the following:
  • Hormone Therapy
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted Therapy
